I don't know what you mean by Steve Pavlina pattern — it sounds like you're describing a variation of Everyman. As I understand it, Everyman is the term for any schedule that has a core and at least 2 naps.
If I understand you correctly, you're asking if it will work to switch between a 3-hour core plus 3 naps and a 4.5-hour core and 2 naps. The answer is probably, especially if you're a 5-cycle/7.5-hour sleeper normally. I can't predict what your adaptation would be like, though. I aimed for consistency first, and experimented with flexibility later. (I'm also a 6-cycle sleeper, so I aim for four naps with a 3-hour core.) My husband's polyphasic sleep schedule is rarely the same from day to day, but he's superhuman or something.
