Default how much "selves" do we really have?

Hi,

Sometimes people say "I'm getting to know myself" or "I want to meet my higher self". Is this really a different perspective of looking at things or are there different parts of us? For instance when I want to remember a dream I have to say to myself, "You are going to remember you dream"; implying, that I have to command some part of me. I have been using the concept of three selves (concious, subconcious, higher-concious), to achieve the things I want, which I adopted from huna. I was wondering if this seperation is some sort of mind trick like the guy from "Fight Club" who created an imaginary character with all the traits he wanted but was timid to try.
