From what i've seen, the 'mail order' is a throwback from way back. Nowadays the service is more a matchmaking service. You pay a fee for a matchmaker to try and set you up. you correspond and possibly go to the host country and have a bunch of 'dates' to see if anything works out.

If something does, its more time to correspond, etc.

you can do the same thing here in the US - there are professional matchmaking services available, and they work the same way.

The stigma, if there is any, are people equating this to men trying to take advantage of women, and that's an assumption. Sure - some are, but some are HERE, too. Some are just looking for a more old-fashioned gender role. While a lot of people don't care for that kind of arrangment, a lot do. Some men are perfectly happy being the breadwinner and having a domestic wife, and for many women raised in that kind of culture, thats an acceptable way of living - therefore everybdy wins.

of course culture is hard to surmount. I know a guy who married a filipina and they've been married for like 40 years now. They are both happy as clams, but it took a while to adjust. But hell - 50% of american marriages end in divorce anyway. Why not take a shot?
