Just a thought.

You say you are an independent woman, so why don't you be proactive about it, and start approaching some men.

Action speaks louder than thoughts/intentions (Men aren't mind readers!)

I kind of know the feeling you have, because I have never had a girlfriend, although I am only 19.

Also, you can't control peoples thoughts, just be yourself and if they don't like it then that's their problem.
