I've been doing similar things. I use various tools from the Sedona Method with serious issues, whenever I struggle to let go. And then there's Gendlin's technique called "focusing", where you watch the emotion/situation as an observer, then focus on the emotion without resistance and feel it intently until you get a "felt shift". I use mindfulness too - whenever I get into the story I just experience the thoughts then let them go.
I'm still learning of course, and I have a tendency to hold on very tight to certain things!
