When I was working a part-time job in college, I remember feeling unchallenged and bored. I had a hard time doing anything, though. I was not very active when it came to finding a better job, and so I didn't find one until a friend helped me get a job at the company he worked at. Most of my jobs came about due to someone else helping me.
If it wasn't handed to me, I didn't do anything above and beyond what I was doing.
For the past couple of years, though, I have been trying to do more. If I do enough, people see me as the one who solves problems. It's easy to get promoted and challenged when you basically show yourself to be a problem solver.
So volunteer for extra work or take on an extra project. I obtained my current job most likely due to the various independent projects I had accomplished. The worst case? You challenge yourself and learn new skills, giving yourself extra things to pepper your resume with.
