Are we talking retaining information, such as studying, or aquiring a new skill, such as learning how to make a website or cook a meal?

If it's retaining information...I had a note taking technique that served me well...what I would do was have a notebook and read the text book of whatever subject. Any word I didn't "own" (as in use it myself and know exactly what it meant in all contexts) I would write it down. After I had about 10 of these words I would write the definition of these words. For me just writing it down helped me retain it.

As far as learning a skill...I would just do it. The best way to learn how to be a computer tech is to break your computer. Heh.
