From what I understand, my higher self is the fullness of me, while my physical being is an aspect. Rather than just my benefactor (helper, teacher, protector), my higher self is fully connected to me. It is wholeness of all my potential, experiencing itself as me while at the same time connected to all that is. My higher self is me not a separate entity.
I agree with what Mato Kinze says about allies up to point reciprocity. Our relationships with these higher level energies is purely unconditional. They have no need from us. The very fact we connect with them and learn is enough for them to stay in communication.
When we are born into this world, we are connected to spirit by two cords. One is an ancestral cord that carries residue from our genetic ancestors and the other is a soul cord that carries residual memory of our souls journey from previous incarnations on earth. We may or may not have previously incarnated into the family we have chosen this time. We may have had many previous lifetimes in any number of different lands and cultures.
My genetic ancestors often pop in for a visit and present themselves across a broad range of awareness that co-relates pretty much to their level of awareness in their physical life. My maternal grandmother who I never met, comes through often as a spiritual teacher which she was before she died. My paternal grandmother visits when we have family get togethers to join in the fun or with simple messages that relate to family members.
Some of my guides have shown lifetimes that we've shared and others say they are me. Some present in more than one physical guise from more than one previous life. Others take no physical form and present as pure energy. Their messages have different characteristics and one may come forward because the question I've asked is their area of expertise. When my first couple of guides had taught me all they could, they stepped back and made way for new guides who took me through the next stage. Initially I experience a period of grief as they moved away because I'd formed a strong bond with them. But they still pop back now and again so I've learned to trust the process.

I agree with everything you said. I think we have very similar experiences and understanding. Your explanation was certainly more thorough than mine, but I was trying to keep it sort of simple by way of introduction.
When I talk of reciprocity, it comes more from an aspect of respect and humility. You're right that Allies and Guides don't NEED anything from us, but practicing respect and humility in the end are better for
us.
Thanks for your insight.
