I'm still trying to really connect with my guides on a more...visceral level, I guess. but I have a good connection to one--well, I guess it's my higher self. I have a woman inside my head, and she changes, but she's my 'guide' through all things, and I can talk to her, especially when I'm alone at home. I don't think that's a guide, though, I think it's my higher self which is different...how do you know the difference?
The times I've felt my guides (as I think of them) is mostly in times of despair, when I've felt comfort accompanied by a tingling sensation over my body. I often also get this tingling when thinking about a recently deceased loved one, and it always seems to give a message of peace.
So, what's the difference in the roles between guides, deceased loved ones who are with us sometimes, and our higher selves? |
I'll take a stab at this from my perspective and the Path that I follow. I'll use the words that I was taught to describe the things you are discussing. But before I do that, understand that this is just MY perspective based on what I have been taught and experienced on my own. We all have different ways of viewing and understanding Spirit, so what I say may not work for you.
That being said, there are three major types of entities that people deal with on the Spiritual plane: Benefactors, Allies, and Ancestors.
The Benefactor, or what some call the Higher Self, is a highly placed Spiritual entity whose sole function is to help you acheive what you orginally incarnated to achieve. They are your teacher, your protector, your "swift kick in the Spiritual butt", whatever is necessary to help you fulfill your original purpose. Your Benefactor is totally committed to you and no one else. They love you unconditionally and accept everything about you without judgement and they always act in your best interest - even when you think they're just being difficult.
Allies, or what some call Angels, are purly Spiritual beings who will help you when called upon, but do not have any specific contract with you. Some people have Allies that stay with them their entire life. Some will take the assistance and help of many different Allies in their lifetime. They can take on any form - plant (such as sacred herbs), animal (otherwise known as Totems), mineral (anyone ever "worked with crystals"?), elementals (Air, Earth, Fire and Water), or even Human. But they are pretty neutral and separate entities and don't "owe" us anything. Therefore, respect, humility, and integrity are the most important attributes to have when seeking their aid. Also, reciprocity is essential. When something is taken, something must be given in exchange.
Ancestors are those spiritual beings who have incarnated as humans at least once but are currently in a spiritual state "soaking up" if you will, what they learned from their last incarnation. These entities can be fickle. You can usually get them to "play along" and convince them to help, but they still have enough of the Tonal in them to do whatever they deem they should. Often, the most appeasment is required to convince these entities to help you or communicate with you. They are also the most likely to be antagonistic to you.
