I hope you understand that I did not disagree with the proposition that competence can build confidence. I merely sought to point out that the relationship is not that absolute or one-way. For example, confidence can also help to build competence; competence can be choked by a lack of confidence etc.
And as I have mentioned, the 'act as if' principle is a much broader idea than a simple discussion of competenc/confidence.
For example, perhaps your original thinking is that "I am a person who does not know how to unicycle across the parking lot" and you had a lot of resistance towards trying. Then what you could have done is
act as if you were a person who is willing to learn and is not afraid of crashing a few times in front of other people.
