Evolutionarily, pain is a response to trauma. It's unpleasant so as to spur you to instantaneous action to address a major problem.
The body sees childbirth (or just poorly managed childbirth?) as trauma and responds with pain. Evolution has
been nice enough to issue some pretty nifty endorphins as part of the process, though.
