I've always found it very easy to get apartments and jobs, but the story behind my current apartment is unusual.
I moved into a little box in a beautiful building in the middle of the city. I could afford the apartment but it was really tiny, even though I really loved the building (it's a 1876 textiles warehouse and beautifully converted). I decided I loved the building so much I would eventually get another, larger apartment in it. I had no idea how I'd do this, and didn't have the money at the time. I even expressed the wish to my agent, who was the one who reminded me of the story recently.
A month later, I had just started a new job (also manifested), and my income had gone up drastically. An acquaintance I knew in lettings got in touch with me because one of the biggest apartments in the building was about to become available. The tenants had moved in on a 12-month lease the same month I moved into my apartment, but there had been so many complaints about them that they were evicted.
Initially, I thought the rent would be too high, but the landlord agreed that I could pay a reduced rate if I paid six months up front and agreed to take it immediately. That would mean they could avoid the cost of marketing it at all, so everybody won. I believe the tenants renting prior to me have moved somewhere with neighbours who don't mind the noise. I've been living here for a year now, and everybody's happy: I'm so quiet that most of my neighbours thought the apartment was empty until I showed up at a party; and I have a vast two-bedroom apartment (known as The Castle) at a reduced rate.
Most recently, I ran into one of those icky situations where a contract came to an end and I had nothing to move on to. I was in the middle of a panic about money when I was offered, at the last minute, an alternative source that has allowed me to work on podcasting my books. I've also managed to pick up a studio in which to record the podcasts and a producer with a real love of my work to polish up the final product. I feel very lucky indeed!
