Amanda, half the fun of goals is reaching them and not stopping

I see it as a series of steps - ultimately I want to make a lot of money, but for the first six months of this year I'm trying to get a consistent income of $4000/month from my freelance work. I may actually do that in the next couple of months, in which case I can decide if I want to continue improving it or put more effort into other things. That will be enough to improve my financial situation so I can use some of my cashflow and time to build up side businesses - and there's where the real money will come from. As you can see I'm not limited in any way by such a "small" goal.
If a goal feels too small for you, set a shorter time for it to make it a real challenge. After all every goal should have a definite time period (other than "in my lifetime") or you could have decades before you even need to start. Even worse, you could suddenly reach your goal in the last month of your life and never get to enjoy it. Just move up the schedule a bit to reach it sooner and you'll be able to move on to bigger things sooner.
To rephrase the old quote, if you want to go on a journey of a thousand miles then an excellent goal to set for yourself is to take the first step
