The bible has a related story about this subject, its in the book of Job, he was a Just person, but God let happen to him a lot of bad things, but not as a punishement, but for growth, the difference is that Job knew who God was and tried to follow what he liked and when something happened to him his attitued was "In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly. " what an interesting attitude isnt it?, but what about someone who doesnt care about what God wants?, i think that bad things would be a way to lure him to God, after all, eternity is much more important than 90 years on earth (if we are very lucky, some people die younger) so God works in misterious ways to show us our possition, so that we may seek God for our own salvation.
Have you actually read Job? Job 1:6-12 clearly states that God did not do this to Job for personal growth purposes, but because he made bet with Satan on whether Job would sin if everything was taken away from him. Job did complain, similar to what I am doing, near the end of the book. God's response was basically "How dare you question me? You can't understand the ways of God" (Job 38-40). I'm sure if Job knew his suffering was a result of a bet with Satan, he wouldn't have held nearly the respect for God as he did, as God's behavior in this book is reprehensible.

Besides, I don't worship the Judeo-Christian God. It's pretty prejudiced to assume that if you say you worship God you must be talking about worshipping the Judeo-Christian one. I'm a Deist/philosophical Taoist.
