I sometimes struggle with this as well (not knowing what I want), I'm getting much better though. Anytime I think of something now, I try and ask myself, IS THIS WHAT I WANT...? If not i'll refocus back on what I DO WANT...
One thing that has helped is looking at it from the standpoint of, what am I interested in... This help me keep better focus on what to think about.
