Hey, Michelle. I recently put on an event on emergency preparedness with a panel that included the top earthquake expert in Los Angeles and reps from the Red Cross and Rand Corp.

They all agreed on two things: make sure you always have shoes within easy reach at your home, cuz they're the first thing you'll need; and make sure you have a plan to reunite your family in case you're separated. They recommended designating a friend or family in another state or country to be your family's point person, program it into your cell phone and drill your kids in memorizing that phone number and email address.

They also said keeping a small stockpile of food, water and first aid is probably a good idea.
