Y'know, I'm in my twenties. And thinking back, trying to picture where I wanted to be in three years, much less one, was nigh impossible. Trying to sketch the big picture is not necessarily a requirement in planning. At least not as a starting point.

Why not try beginning at the opposite end, with the day to day stuff?

What does my daily life look like?
What about my daily life would I like to stay the same?
What would I like to see change?
If I keep doing the same thing I do each day NOW for the next five years, what will my life look like?
Does that scare me or make me happy?

You can do all the long shot, far fetched planning you want to do, but the daily actions are what make it happen. Habits form your destiny. Change your habits, change how your story is written. So, for myself, it is as simple as reinforcing the habits that will get me to where I want to be in three, or even thirty years.
