Depends on the guy's build, of course, but one thing a beard says to me is: virile! Manly!
I, personally, don't *always* prefer a beard, but they do indicate a more alternative leaning outlook, as Dan & Jim pointed out.
I did once convince a boyfriend to grow a beard... it changed his whole outlook, he was much more relaxed. This is a guy who used "product" in his hair, and looked the same every single day... until he met me. Heh.
