It's possible to build muscle on a diet of fast food and budweiser too. What most find though is that it doesn't work. Personally, I know that a low protein diet results in slow recovery from exercise and from injuries. This isn't because I red it somewhere. I tried to live on 50 grams of protein a day and didn't like the consequences.
