Rene is right. It's all a product of how we, as social creatures, live. It's how we learn, how we develop, how we interact with one another, and how we continue to grow in ways which will be beneficial for all.

Rules and guidelines are there because without them we would not know what to do. We don't start life with an understanding of how to interact with the world. But we learn, we make mistakes, and gradually we build up an understanding which guides our way through life with minimal fuss.

Of course that's the ideal. Yes there are some rules which are unhelpful. And yes, some rules have a time and a place, but we mistakenly apply them in the wrong place, or at the wrong time. And yes, sometimes people will convince us to follow certain rules which are purely for their own benefit.

But it's not all a conspiracy, and it's certainly not an illusion. Without social rules humanity would not exist.
