I think when it comes to style, the important thing is to dress consciously. It doesn't have to be expensive, or even 'hip'. Don't wear t-shirts that have a message you don't want to promote, don't just roll out of bed and leave the house, and don't intentionally look trashy. It doesn't matter that Abercrombie and Fitch sold them to you like that, 'paintball-wound pants' still send a message you might not want.
