Taking Nyquil isn't recommended either, it's a sedative, if you must take something go for something herbal. I head for chilli sauce when I want a clear nose - can you have that with coeliac disease? Less than quarter teaspoon of cayenne pepper in a little hot water (enough to swallow in one gulp) followed immediately by one or more glasses of cold water to take the burning away helps clear the nose too. Worked for my blocked Eustachian tubes last week.
I usually don't drink caffeine during the day. I usually go for decaf coffee or iced tea wherever possible. As for NyQuil, I was only taking it at night since I was having problems falling asleep due to coughing fits that were lasting over an hour when I lied down. I haven't fully explored alternative or homeopathic remedies to make a informed choice, especially while on vacation. It's something that I can do now for the next time it happens.
