If you can get to Love or Unconditional Love, it begins to open of its own. You begin to look at things in terms of essence rather than linear content. So a good way to begin is to let go of having an opinion about everything and making judgments about everything. Be open minded and heal any harsh positions you hold.
There are exercises that are supposed to help with the third eye. I'm not sure how effective they are though. I haven't researched them in particular depth. Most exercises in this vein involve breathing white light to the chakra you wish to activate. I always thought it was more the intention than the mechanics that had the effect.
