well, what I heard about is focus on the middle of one's forehead, saying that there's where thoughts arise.
That one had worked for me.
Btw, I think (or better, I experienced) that all thoughts are the expression of personality, and ego (I do not mean that the ego is "bad", eh! ok?)
Thoughts cloud our view.

But, I wanted to make another point. Thoughts can be helpful in recognizing what's going on in us because most of the time those thoughts are well dressed: with our feelings. So, watching them while they pass by (in focusing on the middle of the forehead- [once I will try "your" technique]), this gives us some insights, not always very pleasant, but healing. Watching them without interfering also leads them to pass and go. And thus frees the mind without suppressing thoughts or feelings. That's another "method". From another website/another spiritual teacher.
