When I was younger I had a lot of nightmares, just horror. And after a while I developed a technique IN my dream to become awake, so I didn't have to get through the whole nightmare anymore.
In my dream I would decide I didn't want it anymore, and then really tightly I would close my eyes and then after a few seconds I would open them. Thinking about it, it's quite strange I knew I was dreaming then and could stop it, since I'm mostly not aware of dreaming these days.
But I would use this when for example a lot of people with knives and weapons would run after me. I would just stop, close my eyes (would also stop having pains I would normally have when they would hit me) and then open them. And most of the time it worked instantly, sometimes I needed a few tries.
