You can also do this sitting on the couch with your eyes closed in a quiet room. However, sometimes I fall asleep even sitting. There's been many nights where I've fallen asleep only to awaken at 4:30am sitting on the couch, journal on the ground, pen on the floor, lights on.
I would imagine a "hard chair" might work better trying not to fall asleep.
One thing I'd like to add though. I've played with this technique for the past 8 years or so. At some points I thought I was falling asleep, however in fact I wasn't. Meaning, I did connect to my subconscious mind and had a chat with it, but the next morning I didn't remember it because it was my subconscious I was talking to, not my conscious mind. It was only after I realized this as a possibility that I told myself "By the way, I want to remember having this conversation consciously tomorrow when I wake up so that I know this technique worked." and then I would remember it.
