Default Goals

I have heard somewhere that we shouldn't set goals that are outcome orientated; but we should rather set goals that are action oriented.

This is because the successful completion of the goal should be under our control. For example if you are a salesman and want to make more money...your goal should NOT be "get more sales this month" because whether you get more sales or not is not under your control. What is under your control is your own actions for example a better goal would be "to make 200 extra sales calls this month" this is a goal that you know you can accomplish.

Making more money is just the target, but the goal is the action you have to take so that you have a better chance of hitting your target.

If we set goals this way we have nothing to fear about being a failure because you cannot fail as long as you perform the action that you set out to perform.
