Hi Keith,
The thing is that my friend is a smart guy and extremely nice, too. I've known him for many years and he doesn't block out other people, he just justifies his own decision as it is the right one despite others' opinions. He's been doing it for years and to everyone. Even when he is approached in regards to this habit of his, he justifies that, too.
I think that he is in a point in his life that he has to learn about his faults on his own because he doesn't listen to others in that regard.
Despite what I have said about him, he is a wonderful caring guy.
