Even if you can avoid justified criticism by doing a good job, it seems you have been damaged by the possibility of being unjustly critised. Maybe you feel unprepared for unjustified criticism because it is beyond your control.

I don't have direct advise regarding this problem, but for the long term you might consider a perspective shift towards subjective reality. It greatly affects your relationships in a positive way, and gives control back to you.

It is hard to get at first but I have great results with it, including in my consulting career. If you deal with people a lot, developing this perspective can be your greatest career asset.
