I do not signal to ask to switch lanes. I've found that method wholly ineffective. Drivers seem to hold position or even speed up to block any access I would have to the desired lane.

Instead, when I want to change lanes, I look for an opportunity, then tell the other drivers "Ready or not, I'm coming into your lane" with my turn signal. Invariably, the other drivers make room for me to enter, as that allows everyone to get to their destination quicker.

I appreciate your metaphor, and thinking about it now, that may be the challenge: to stop "asking" to be "let in" but rather to broadcast our intentions with authority.
