I recall seeing a lecture some time ago by professor Michael Persinger who's studied exactly this phenomena. He used small magnets placed in a sort of helmet arrangement that went on a subject's head. The magnets somehow stimulated the temporal lobes in the brain, causing all sort of oddball effects; a feeling of dissociation, false memories, the whole "going to the light and meeting dead relatives" process that's often described as a near-death experience and a host of other peculiarities, even delusions of alien abduction . More info here and here.
