I have connected with my guides before, but the wierdest thing was, it happened when I first started dabbling in psychic related things (and my spirit animal guide thing, whatever that thing was). I guess they will come to you when you least expect them to and they feel you are ready. Although, another way to look at this is that you may be on the right path and not need their help.
Maybe you should try asking to be sent a specific sign that you do have actual spirit guides (I heard this one person who could astral travel and she had no spirit guides, but she was also REALLY distrustful of spirits anyways and didn't feel she needed their help).
That's all I can think of.
