To run with the degree/grades analogy, maybe think of each incarnation as another year. So you've got 12-13 years of school, then a undergrad degree maybe 4 years, then a grad degree anywhere from a couple of years to heaps. And then multiply that by the level of breathtaking learning that your HS might want to do, and hundreds upon hundreds of incarnations might make sense.

After all, if you wanted to learn pure maths, you wouldn't keep going back to 1st grade, you'd keep working your way up. Whoever said that you're learning the same things in each incarnation? You learn what your HS wants to learn.
