What about learning about the decisions they made which shaped the society their ancestors lived in? And the reasons for those decisions?

I agree that a lot of stuff that kids are taught is irrelevant to them at that point in time. But then arguably so is a lot of self-improvement. Lots of kids just don't care about it.

Yet in either case the information can be very useful if presented in a way they'll grasp. Being able to make effective decisions is something that could easily be learnt by studying history, and it's also an aspect of personal development.
