"I am unhappy" is such a definite pronouncement on how you see your reality and it doesn't leave any room for change or improvement in the situation. That said, it's very difficult to go from "I am unhappy" to "I am happy" in one big leap, so try adding process-type statements after your "I am"s. For example: I am finding things to be grateful for every day, I am starting to become happier each day, I am feeling a bit better about my life every day etc.

Changing your words really can start to change your reality.
The problem is that I am not currently finding things to be grateful for. I have a few things I am grateful for. Don't get me wrong. I want to make some real changes in my life, and yes I see where some positive thinking might help me. But it has to be real and true. If I'm not becoming much happier each day, or creating the circumstances for me to be doing so, then what is the purpose of me saying that I am.

I'm glad EFT and NLP works for you, but unfortunately they don't work for me. At one point in my life they did, but this time the only thing that is going to help is for circumstances to change. But I don't know how to change those circumstances.
