Thank you so much everyone for your responses. I've come to the conclusion that what I experienced must have been what cdn2wheeler describes as "the hag" - nighttime paralysis. My body was rigid. I couldn't move at all. The evil presence was real though.
Rahzad - your description of neg denizens certainly sent shivers down my spine - literally. A prayer of protection before sleep is a good idea.
