Just ask!
When my dad was dying, I found out from a doctor that he had lung cancer. I always wondered if he knew he had it - because it was never treated medically - and chose not to tell me, or if he didn't know. It bothered me for a long time after he passed away. Finally, one day, I just asked him, and not long after, I *knew* the answer.
