If the classes at the bookstore are worth anything, they'll not only teach you how to tune in to you psychic abilities, but how to protect yourself, too. The more you learn, the more discerning you'll be.
You might like Sonja Choquette's book The Psychic Pathway. If I remember correctly, it's a workbook (set up as a 12-week course) for expanding your awareness and learning to listen to your intuition. She addresses the challenges of growing up in religion early in the book.
