Oh, that's easy. They're the voices of confident me vs. insecure me that have been around since high school. You know the ones - "Dang girl, you're looking good/are so smart/are the best person for that job" vs. "Did you notice you're getting a little cellulite on your thighs?/what do you know?/you'll never get it - why even try!"
I do find it significant that the second guy was only indifferent. In the past he would have been super-hyper-critical. Indifference is an improvement. Insecure me is a lot less so these days and shows up much more infrequently!
