I think the lines seem to be drawn between those who believe in more of an outside god, and those who believe they are god. Those who believe God is outside them, speak in terms of karma, or doing good deeds to get a reward, like they are being judged and will be rewarded properly if it's in the service of others.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "contribute to society". Many people who may not appear to contribute to society, make plenty of money.
