My advice is to stop equating religion with spirituality. I'm not going to go on a Bible-bashing spree, but it's important to remember that religions have cultural contexts, and when you try to reconcile our culture with that of a 2000+ year old book (which is actually a collection of documents, some of which are much, much older than 2000 years), you will naturally experience some dissonance.
Try reading some other texts along with the Bible, and try to reconcile them. That will be a very awareness-raising experience.
