I was self employed for a few years, and I'll never forget after 90 days in business, I had 11 grand in receivables and 4 grand in expenses. To me, that was shocking, because I had been making about 600 bucks a week for the last five years.
It got better and better, and within a year, I had WAY more than doubled my income, and worked when I chose (which sometimes meant pulling 30 hour shifts, but who wouldn't for 4 or 5 grand??). The only bosses I had were my customers, and I treated them like gold, which made the whole thing enjoyable
I had to go back to work for someone (long story, but let's just say I needed better insurance than I could get being self employed at the time), but I definitely want to go self employed again when I'm able. I'm just not sure what I want to do. Once you work for yourself, it's tough to go back to work for someone else.
