Those before Christ cleansed themselves with animal sacrifices and were required to keep the law. I suppose those that didn't went to hell.
Jesus came and became the ultimate sacrifice and no more animal sacrifices were needed and mankind was no longer bound to the law except those that Jesus said needed to still be followed, ala Love your neighbour...
