I believe the standard way of letting someone know you're interested in them is to make eye contact and smile
persistently, not just once. Of course you can't predict what a guy will think, but unless he's totally clueless he should be able to tell the difference. However, I think this would increase the overall chances of someone of either gender starting conversations with you, because smiling says that you're a friendly, welcoming person.
