I'd suggest you read up on sleep cycles and perhaps bi phasic sleep.
The consensus seems to be that we sleep in 90 minute cycles (give or take 10 minutes). At the end of each cycle we are just below the threshold of waking. If you can wake at the end of a cycle you generally wake more refreshed than if you wake in the middle of the cycle.
There's a whole load of information on alpha waves, delta waves and rem sleep but it's probably best you read up on it yourself, draw your own conclusions and experiment yourself.
I generally nap 9pm-10:30pm and then sleep 2:30am to 7am.
