I'd like to have a bet both ways. General knowledge will probably not be something that will make you a lot of money or win you any awards but it is interesting and if being considered well read and an intellectual are considered wrothy goals (which I do) then it's agood idea. My advice would be that rather than reading books listen to podcasts and audiobooks instead. I've personally found that this is a good way to expand you knowledge, largely because they are things that can be done while you're doing other things so you tend to go a little broader than you otherwise would- I've listened to books which I probably never would have borrowed from the library but which have been really enjoyable and thought provoking.

A recent personal example, I borrowed a copy of the unabridged audio book of Oliver Twist and listened to it one Saturday while I cooked up a heap of meals for the month ahead...
