I stumbled with the construction of the device. I started looking at other (easier) alternatives for the detection of REM sleep inlcuding the onset of snoring and monitoring blood pressure, but nothing appears to be as accurate as the movement of eyes.
I need to further my electronics skills before I can carry forward.
