I don't know how many people are aware of this, but did you know that The matrix took a lot of influences from many religions like buddhism, Messianism - but I find the most references from Hinduism.
The reason being in Hinduism there is a major epic during which a hero asks God (who has incarnated as his best friend) for advice on a certain predicament on the eve of the final battle. This is when God explains about the how the world we see is sort of fake, and you can awake into the real world (through devotion, and following dharma, doing karma etc) and more importantly, explains why he should fight the battle.
(there are a lot more similarities but I won't be going into those on this forum)
My point is - the story is trying to explain to us that we CAN awake at anytime from the world around us, break free and live in the real world - free and happy. In hinduism it is by accepting God into your heart and following his way - in the matrix... well you've seen the movie
But it's interesting that PD/religion/waking up from the machine's fields and becoming the one - are all pointing in the same direction.
