It's so strange, now I can barely remember feeling so tortured over this. It happened about 6 years ago. I would say the first couple of months were really bad (it was summer, didn't have classes to distract me). In six months to a year I was feeling 100% better. I came to realize that I wanted someone who wanted me and could be honest.
I think you've been a sweet guy. Unfortunately a lot of people will take advantage of that, maybe on purpose, maybe not. Try not to feel stupid. You feel what you feel and that's okay. I know you will be alright.
