I'm assuming you mean AdWords, but yes, I have dealt with a couple of hundred clients and the vast majority of them find AdWords to be successful. as long as you track the clicks to the conversion (a lead or a sale) through some analytics software, you can establish a cost per conversion and manage your ad campaigns to ensure that you are getting a return on your investment.

It's definitely worth a test for any business, but it takes experience to properly build out a campaign and it could take a while to 'optimize it' to ensure that you are targeting the phrases that have the highest conversions at the lowest cost.

On a side note, many businesses throw lots of money at advertising without knowing what they are willing and able to spend to acquire a lead or a sale. They just haphazardly throw money around and hope it will bring in business. Or, they know they are getting business from a source but don't track it properly to see if they are getting enough business from that source to ensure ROI.

The beauty of pay-per-click, if executed and managed properly, is it allows you to track and quantify an exact amount (down to the penny) of what your cost per conversion is. I don't know of any other advertising mediums that offer that level of sophistication...
